Your bedroom needs to be a place of rest and relaxation, and so you need to make sure that it is lit properly. By adjusting the various levels of lighting in a room, you will be able to create any atmosphere in here that you could want. Here is how to light your bedroom properly.
The Rule of Three
When lighting any room in your house, you need to think of the rule of three. These are the three types of lighting that you could have, and each will work very well within a bedroom. They are ambient light, accent light, and task light. Some lamps that you might put around your room could serve as several types of these lighting styles.
Ambient Light
Ambient light is the general light used to make the room bright. In the case of a bedroom, this is usually a ceiling light. When used on its own, it is bright and should be able to illuminate the entire room without the aid of another.
This type of light does not have to be harsh, even if it is bright. By adding silk lamp shades and a colour-changing smart bulb, you will have a much softer light that is still able to throw out the light needed for its task.
Accent Light
Accent lights are used to bring attention to a certain area of the room. For example, if you have artwork hung on the wall, you might decide to put accent lights on either side of it to properly draw attention to it.
In a bedroom, the best accent lighting is a bedside light. These are soft and cosy, and can be placed on either side of a bed to help make it the centre of the room. Choose bulbs with a dim yellow glow to create the perfect ambience here.
Task Lighting
As the name might suggest, task lighting is used to aid with a particular activity. This type of light does tend to be bright, but it will not shed light over as wide an area as an ambient light.
Bedside lamps are the perfect example of accent lights that also serve as task lighting. While a bedside light is often used to evoke a certain atmosphere in a room, it is also used for tasks such as reading in bed. Another great example of task lighting might be around a vanity or dressing table, as you will want enough light to be able to properly prepare for the day.
With each of these types of lighting represented around your bedroom in some way, you will be able to light this space however you choose. Try to pick lights that you know will fit together well. Installing a dimmer switch for the ceiling light can be a great move if you feel it is a little too bright, while the right bedside lights can truly transform a room for the better.
